I love this kayak. It is comfortable and fun to row, and it is easy to store and easy to transport. You can even check it as baggage on a plane trip. The first few times it can be a chore to assembly and disassemble, but it gets easier after the material stretches a bit. I can assemble or disassemble it in 10 minutes. A non foldable hard shell tracks a bit better in the water, but they can be very hard to. transport and they require a rack on top of your car.

I’ve been waiting to get an Oru for 2 years. Very happy I finally did! Once you learn how the folding process works, it’s quite easy to use.

I love it. Have used it every day since I got it. Sets up and breaks down in two minutes. I thought it was expensive but I’m getting my use out of it and would recommend it to anyone who values fresh air and exercise

Overall I love this kayak.
I bought it with the essentials package which comes with PFD, oru pack, paddles.
Assembly: it will take some practice. I suggest doing it at home (yard, garage, etc) a few times before taking it out for to the water. After doing it 3x, i was able to unfold it and assemble in 5 mins or so. If i had help, 3 mins or so. One person assemble the bow and cockpit, and another the stern and/or cockpit.
Performance: it works great in calm lagoon, lakes, rivers. Due to the large size of the open cockpit, its not meant for wavy rough waters because water will get in and there’s no drain hole. Without any place to drain the water, the water will remain inside the kayak until you flip it upside down. That’s why Oru offer The Bay or Coast for those types of water. This kayak is really meant for family fun. I had my 8 year old, and 3 year old, and my backpack of food etc, with me (keeping in mind 300lb total capacity). We had so much fun just playing around in the lake. This kayak is hard to capsize. You have to do it on purpose to capsize this thing. Its not speedy by any means. Again its meant for recreational fun.
Disassembly: Just do opposite of what you did to assemble. It takes 3 mins for me to do it myself. Super easy. Before you disassemble, i recommend you rinse off the kayak inside and outside. If you have nowhere to rinse fresh water with, whereever you are, bring a gallons jug of water and just pour it all over to rinse it off. Especially true if you played in brackish or saltwater. Rinse off the salt in any metal area and buckles.
Of note: Mid season 2017 and later Beach LT had a change in cockpit buckle. Its no longer ratchet buckle but rather clip and strap buckle. I reached out to Oru Kayak about this and they confirmed the mid season change due to customer feedback about the ratchet buckle. For those who don’t know what i mean, its the buckle near the buckleheads in the bow and stern. I find it easier to pull the strap in the opposite direction, meaning away from you. Be at the side where it curves, and pull away from you while pushing curved side to the straight side. With enough muscle, you will get them close to each other so the other snap closures will reach each other. In comparison to the ratchet, i actually like the redesign.
I recommend to get the ORU Pack. That backpack really helped me transport the kayak everywhere i went. Its a lot easier then the shoulder strap alone. Also, its good to store it in the pack and not collect dust in your garage or home etc.
Changes I would recommend is the seat pad and seatback. Perhaps make it a bit more comfy and add more cushion.

Easy to put together. No leaks or worries. Get the spray skirt.

Very easy to assemble just like in video, my husband was thrilled with the surprise. Can’t wait to get it in the water.

I was on the fence with this one for nearly 2 weeks, but so glad I finally decided to pull the trigger. This thing has all the benefits of a hardshell kayak, but I no longer have to figure out how I’m going to fit them in my car or how I’m going to store it when I get home. Not needing to find a place to store them over the winter means that they will have basically paid for themselves in one season. So glad I took the plunge!

Ez to assemble and is stable in the water. Be ready as it creates quite the conversation whenever I’m assembling or packing it up.
Had a minor warranty issue that the team at Oru jumped on and are taking care of. They respond within a day or so which is really nice!
When I’m ready to upgrade I’ll be looking at an Oru kayak again.

There was an issue with delivery right before a big trip, so I got a stand-up paddle board. My best friend bought it, and it was delivered on time. I can’t tell you how many times we used her Oru bc it was light and easy to transport… super jealous and highly recommend!

I am a 67 year ole woman and I can assemble by myself. I put kayak in my golf cart and take it to the water. One bad thing the customer service at ORU is terrible. They do not have a phone number that you can call. Communication done via email and they are slow in responding if they respond at all.

It’s great, but I would have bought the smaller model if it was available at the time. It doesn’t tip over when my ~40 pound dog clima in and out of it on the water. Easy to put together too.

First off, this Kayak is much easier and quicker to assemble and disassemble than I expected. And, despite it’s overall lightness, it is extremely sturdy. It glides rather quickly through the water, and has a ton of storage room.
Plus, everybody who sees it thinks it’s the coolest innovation they’ve witnessed in the water. Add to that the fact that it fits perfectly in the trunk of a car with space to spare for a collapsible paddle (which I bought separately from Dick’s Sporting Goods) and a PFD, and you’re set to go!
I can’t think of any negatives to say, to be honest.

Wonderful way to get out on the water. The assembly time decreases quickly with each use. Fits easily into car trunk.

I had an inflatable before buying this and the Oru is a huge upgrade. Its hull has chines, so you don’t have to use a skeg to keep it tracking properly, which can be a problem in the shallow water I often paddle in. I’m usually paddling on rivers or on the Intracostal or other milder waters, so I’m not too concerned about waves, but it does well in moderate chop. I bought the inflatable bouys that Oru sells on their website to put into the bow and stern, which will keep the kayak afloat in case of disaster, but I haven’t yet worried that I would capsize. It has plenty of room for my gear, and I find the seat very supportive, and no more or less comfortable than any other kayak seat I’ve used. If you are unable to sit with your torso at a right angle to your legs for any length of time you probably won’t be comfortable in this kayak (or really any kayak without a raised seat).
I am a petite 65 year-old woman and I have no trouble carrying it or setting it up. It takes me under 10 minutes to set up and about half that to fold it back up. It is pretty effortless and I find it much easier to put away than the inflatable.
What I like best about this kayak is the freedom it gives me to take my kayak anywhere with little effort and no assistance.

My ORU Beach was so fun, I bought a second one for my husband or for taking a friend out with me. We travel full time in an Airstream trailer, so not a lot of room. We’re in our 70’s and didn’t want to be lifting one into the roof, but really wanted to be able to explore the lakes we visit. The ORU was the perfect solution. So far I feel like it’s very sturdy and steady in the water, besides the obvious space saver.

I’ve wanted a kayak for a long time. Even tried a cheap recreational model a few years ago. It was hard to steer and hard to keep moving–like paddling a plastic to-go box. The beach light is a revolutionary leap forward. I’m 5 feet tall, 100 pounds, and over 60–but I can transport this in my Toyota Matrix, assemble it myself in 15 minutes, carry it to the lake, and paddle it for hours. It tracks extremely well and doesn’t require weightlifter arm strength to maintain momentum. And it’s comfortable. Well worth the price, and pretty fun to show off to amazed spectators watching you magically fold your box into a kayak! (Do practice assembling and disassembling a few times in your living room before you go public:)
